The types of toothbrushes are dazzling, experts teach you how to choose
Dec 02,2025
Toothbrush is an important tool for maintaining oral hygiene, but the wide variety of toothbrush types on the market can be overwhelming, making it difficult to choose.
Toothbrushes mainly come in flat head, wavy, concave, crescent shaped, and slender top types. Flat head types are mainly straight handles, with bristles that are moderately soft and hard, arranged flat and even, and are the basic types of toothbrushes. The other types belong to specific toothbrushes designed to adapt to special oral conditions, such as wave shaped and concave shaped toothbrushes, which are beneficial for cleaning tooth gaps; Crescent shaped toothbrush is convenient for cleaning the outer side of teeth; The top slim toothbrush is convenient for cleaning gum grooves and gaps between teeth. In addition, there are three types of bristles for toothbrushes: soft, medium, and hard. The brush handle is divided into straight handle and angled handle, and the brush head also varies in size.
So, how can I choose the one that suits me? Liu Hong, Deputy Chief Physician of the Department of Stomatology at Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, provides the following suggestions:
Firstly, it is advisable to use a hard bristled brush when drinking tea. In general, the bristle hardness can be selected based on the individual's dental condition and feeling, as being too soft makes it difficult to achieve cleaning goals, and being too hard can damage teeth and gums. In principle, it is recommended for children to use soft fur; People who smoke, drink coffee, or tea and have pigmentation on their teeth can use a medium hard bristled toothbrush. But be careful not to use a hard bristled toothbrush to brush teeth horizontally for a long time, and not to apply too much force, otherwise it will cause wedge-shaped defects in the teeth.
Secondly, the bristles are round and smooth without pricking the hands. After the bristles are cut horizontally, if they are not polished, it is easy to cause gum damage due to burrs, while a toothbrush with rounded bristles will not experience this situation. It is recommended to touch the bristles on the end face with your hand after buying a new toothbrush. If there is any sharp or rough feeling, replace it in a timely manner.
Thirdly, the brush head should be small and the brush handle should be non slip. The short and narrow brush head can rotate flexibly in the oral cavity, reaching various parts of the teeth without leaving blind spots. At the same time, it is best to choose an angled handle with anti slip design for the brush handle, which is easier to penetrate into the corners of the mouth and can also facilitate force application, reducing hand fatigue.
It should be noted that toothbrushes should be selected from major brands as much as possible. After each use, rinse with water several times and shake off the moisture on the bristles. Place them in a well ventilated area to prevent bacterial growth. It is best to replace the toothbrush in a timely manner after three months of use to avoid deformation and bending of the bristles, which may reduce the cleaning intensity.
